Curriculum for Excellence is changing the way current S1 pupils are taught. Some subjects (Literacy, Numeracy, Health and Wellbeing) are now taught by every teacher.
Over the last two years the music department has trialled new ideas and created new course materials for S1 pupils to use. Because music has close links with many subjects, class music is taught using Interdisciplinary (IDL) and Multidisciplinary (MDL) links.
IDL Projects are taught by many staff in different classrooms.
MDL Projects are designed with colleagues from other subjects included in the project and taught by Mrs Rzuchowska in the music room.

AUGUST TO DECEMBER – CHOOSING INSTRUMENTS
Pupils take a taster course on the following instruments:
Tuned Percussion Keyboard Guitar Voice Drumkit
Pupils taking instrument lessons can incorporate those instruments into class work where appropriate.
ALL YEAR – LEARNING TO SING AND PLAY
Pupils concentrate on the two instruments that suit them best.
SEPTEMBER – CFE PROJECT – HIGHLAND CLEARANCES
Exploring Songs about the Clearances.
NOVEMBER – CFE PROJECT – S1 SONGS INSPIRED BY CONFLICT
S1 compose songs about Conflict in preparation for a CfE Poppy Day Project in early November.
JANUARY – CFE PROJECT – BURNS NIGHT
All pupils play and sing Burns songs culminating in a mini Burns Supper and ceilidh.
Some pupils will perform at Community Burns Supper in the Academy and/or at local residential Care Homes in Dornoch.
JANUARY TO EASTER – TRADITIONAL SCOTS MUSIC
EASTER TO MAY – MDL PROJECT – SEA SHANTIES
Music and Geography work together to discover how Scots music travelled around the world.
SUMMER TERM – WORLD AND POP MUSIC
Exploring music from different countries and having fun playing favourite pop songs.
